Zambrano Ready for a Return to the Majors

Zambrano

TRENTON — A name that sends Mets fans into a tizzy has quietly emerged as a possible starter for the Yankees this Saturday.

Victor Zambrano, whom the Mets acquired in a trade for Scott Kazmir shortly before the 2004 trading deadline, pitched for the Trenton Thunder, the Yankees’ Class-AA affiliate, on Monday. His manager said Zambrano, two seasons removed from elbow surgery, is ready to pitch again in the major leagues.

“He’s a guy who had command of both sides of the plate and command of the strike zone,” Thunder Manager Tony Franklin said on Tuesday about Zambrano’s outing, in which he pitched five innings, allowed four hits and no runs.

“As I have said, if you can make pitches low in the strike zone, you can pitch anywhere, and he did that and could pitch in the big leagues,” Franklin added.

Before he was promoted to Trenton, Zambrano made two starts with the Yankees’ Class-A affiliate in Tampa and did not allow a run in eight innings.

“I am doing good and feeling good, and my arm is in good shape,” Zambrano said. “It was my second Tommy John surgery, so you have to be patient. My velocity is there — 90, 91, 89. When I signed with the Yankees it was to prove that I am healthy and to get an opportunity to pitch.”

The Mets’ deal for Zambrano has turned into one of the more embarrassing in team history. In 2005, his first full season with the Mets, Zambrano went 7-12 with a 4.17 earned run average. He made only five starts in 2006 before he had elbow surgery. He never pitched again for the Mets and bounced from team to team. Meanwhile, Kazmir has become one of the best left-handed pitchers in baseball.

With the Yankees needing a starter for Saturday, Zambrano is being mentioned along with Carl Pavano and Phil Hughes, as possibilities.

And, what did Zambrano think of his chances? He shrugged his shoulders and smiled, “It’s going to be a good story. It hasn’t been easy, but I’ve been working everyday.”
