When Chamberlain Returns, Another Transition Awaits

If Joba Chamberlain completes a 35-pitch session against hitters without any difficulty on Saturday, the Yankees said they could active him soon after. Chamberlain has a rotator cuff problem and has not pitched since Aug. 4.
Manager Joe Girardi strongly suggested Friday that when Chamberlain returns he will come back as a reliever, not a starter. Although Chamberlain’s arm will need time to get stronger before he can start, the Yankees would rather have him in the bullpen than have him strengthening his arm on a rehabilitation assignment.
“I feel there’s nothing that’s holding me back as far as strength wise,” Chamberlain said. “We got one more test tomorrow. Hopefully that will be the last one before we can get in a game.”
As Chamberlain transitioned from the bullpen to the rotation about three months ago, the Yankees never sent him to the minor leagues to build up his arm strength. Instead, Chamberlain used whatever allotment of pitches he was allowed in the major leagues and increased his strength in that fashion.
“That’s what we did before so I’m thinking we’re thinking along the same lines,” Girardi said.
Chamberlain, who is 4-3 with a 2.63 earned run average, said it has been exasperating to be a spectator. Since he went on the disabled list, the team is 11-12.
“It’s frustrating not to be out there with them battling,” he said. “I know I’m trying to get back there and be with them. It’s still frustrating not to be with them through pitch one through the end of the game.”
When Chamberlain was asked if his comeback would be determined by him or by the medical staff, he said, it would be based on “how I feel.” Chamberlain said he was hoping to return in time to have an impact on a Yankees team that is fading.
“We got a chance,” he said. “We always got a chance.”
RODRIGUEZ ARRIVES LATE
Alex Rodriguez was late for pre-game activities at Yankee Stadium on Friday and took batting practice indoors. Girardi said Rodriguez had been delayed by traffic and joked, “I’m going to give him a different way to get here.” Shortly before Rodriguez arrived, Girardi said he thought Rodriguez receives too much attention.
“I think so because one guy has never won a World Series for you, a season series,” Girardi said. “It takes 25 people. So I think there’s always a ton of focus on him. There’s a ton of focus on him because he’s expected to be great every day.”
