For Yanks, a Return, but Not a Triumph

Blue Jays 2, Yankees 1

Published: August 19, 2008

TORONTO — This is how badly things are going for the Yankees: They activated a star player from the disabled list on Tuesday, and it indirectly lost them a game.

Hideki Matsui returned as the designated hitter, which pushed Johnny Damon into full-time duty in center field. He dropped a fly ball in the first inning and got away with it. But when Damon leaped on the warning track with one on and two out in the eighth inning, he let a deep drive by Toronto’s Marco Scutaro deflect off his glove for a double.

Damon flipped away his glove in disgust, but there was nothing he could do to erase the damage. Joe Inglett scored from first on the play, and B. J. Ryan saved a 2-1 victory for A. J. Burnett in the ninth.

“Those should have been two easy outs,” Damon said. “If they’re going to use me in center more, I need to be better. That’s very uncharacteristic of me and of most center fielders in the league. I’ll take this one on me.”

With the victory, the Blue Jays crept a game behind the third-place Yankees in the American League East. The Yankees are 11 games behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays and six and a half behind the Boston Red Sox, who lead for the wild card.

Burnett struck out 13 over eight innings for his 16th victory. José Veras took the loss in relief of Darrell Rasner, who carried a shutout into the seventh before allowing a game-tying homer to Adam Lind.

“I wish I would have been better on that one pitch,” Rasner said. “I’m going to try not to beat myself up.”

Across the locker room, Damon was doing plenty of that. He said he wished he had been playing deeper against Scutaro, to guard against a double, because then he might not have had to jump at the track.

But he made no excuse for the play, which he said should have been ruled an error. The ball simply hit the top of his glove and fell away. “I’m baffled,” Damon said.

The Yankees hoped for a ninth-inning rally when Alex Rodriguez led off with a spinning bloop single over first baseman Lyle Overbay. Rodriguez said he thought the ball would trickle to the side wall, but Overbay chased it down, sliding on his knees to barehand it before throwing a strike to second to nab Rodriguez.

It was reminiscent of a game in Anaheim this month when Rodriguez was caught stealing third, trying to force the action. But it was a gamble worth taking, he said, because the Yankees have struggled for runs.

“The one thing we shouldn’t do is play passive,” Rodriguez said. “If he does three things — barehand it, slide and throw a strike — he deserves it. We didn’t do enough early in the game.”

That was because of Burnett, who regularly carves up the Yankees. So does his teammate Roy Halladay, who starts Thursday. In the last two seasons, Burnett is 4-0 with a 1.21 earned run average in five starts against the Yankees.

He walked Damon to lead off the first, but issued no more walks the rest of the game. The Yankees got an opposite-field double from Bobby Abreu to score Damon, then they went cold.

Burnett’s fastball had vicious late movement — in the fifth, Damon could only wave at a tailing third-strike fastball he expected to be inside — and his curveball was humbling.

“He was throwing pellets,” said Rodriguez, who struck out three times. “He was 0-2 on everybody, throwing in the high- to mid-90s, and then he had a snake for a breaking ball. Give him credit.”

At a softer setting, Rasner was just as effective. The Blue Jays tried to take advantage of his aggressive approach by swinging early, but that helped Rasner because he was locating his pitches so well.

He threw only seven pitches in the fifth, and six in the sixth. Through that inning his pitch count was 68, and he worked into the seventh for only the second time in 11 starts.

With one out and the left-handed Lind batting, Manager Joe Girardi had the left-handed Dámaso Marte warming up in the bullpen. But Rasner had struck out Lind with a cutter in the fourth inning, and he stayed in to face him.

“He’d done a good job against him,” Girardi said. “I was comfortable with Raz, the way he was throwing the ball.”

But this time, Lind lifted a cutter over the right-field wall for a homer to tie the score, 1-1. As he watched the ball’s flight, Rasner slumped forward, his hands on his knees, and shouted. The lead was lost — not to return — and another day was soon gone from a season that is rapidly shrinking.

INSIDE PITCH

Carl Pavano has pitched twice for the Yankees in the last 1,149 days, but he could start Saturday in Baltimore despite rumblings of various minor injuries. General Manager Brian Cashman and Joe Girardi said that Pavano would pitch in the bullpen on Wednesday. “He’s going to start Saturday,” Cashman said. “Whether for us or for Trenton remains to be seen, but he’s definitely starting on Saturday.” Girardi said Pavano and Phil Hughes, another candidate to start Saturday, were experiencing “normal soreness” after their minor league starts on Sunday. Cashman said other minor leaguers could be options for the start, and it is worth noting that Víctor Zambrano pitched five shutout innings for Class AA Trenton on Monday. ... Joba Chamberlain played catch and made 60 throws. He will intensify the workout on Thursday and throw in the bullpen on Saturday but does not seem likely to return this month.

Damon: “That’s unacceptable”

There are tough losses, there are bad losses and then there are losses when your center fielder drops a ball with two outs in the eighth inning to cost you the game.

There are Yankees who play just as hard as Johnny Damon but nobody who plays harder. He’s a full-effort guy and has been since the day he arrived.

He just screwed up two plays tonight.

“Plain and simple, I missed two balls and that’s unacceptable,” Damon said. “I know that stuff happens sometimes but catching routine fly balls should be that much of a problem. I’m baffled.”

It wasn’t quite routine. But it’s a play that has to be made.

The Yankees are 6.5 games out of the wild card with 37 games to play. If the Red Sox simply go .500, they’ll win 91 games. The Yankees would have to go 25-12 to match that.

Will He or Won’t He? Pavano May Be On Deck

Rarely has a “To Be Determined” caused more intrigue than the one on the Yankees’ schedule for Saturday. That is when the Yankees play in Baltimore, and their starting pitcher could be Carl Pavano.

It could also be Phil Hughes. Or maybe even Victor Zambrano, based solely on his five strong innings for Class AA Trenton on Monday. But it really could be Pavano.

There was chatter today that Pavano had complained about an issue with his lat muscle, but General Manager Brian Cashman said there was no such issue. Maybe it was only idle talk, but there is no groundswell of excitement in the clubhouse for a Pavano return, and a good deal of skepticism. The Yankees have been fooled before.

Say this for Pavano, though -– he has worked diligently to come back on schedule from last June’s Tommy John elbow surgery. Perhaps he is motivated by wanting to showcase himself for free agency this winter. Or perhaps he will beg out of the start for some reason.

But for now, he’s an option. The man who has pitched two major league games in the last 1,149 days might really start for the Yankees on Saturday. A strange season would get a lot stranger.

Then again, a start by Zambrano might be just as strange. Michael S. Schmidt ran into Zambrano in Trenton on Tuesday, and he’ll have a post soon about what he learned.

U.S. clinches berth in medal round

Fowler leads Americans to victory over Chinese Taipei
By Mark Newman / MLB.com

BEIJING -- Despite some tense moments along the way, the four favorites advanced from the original field of eight and will meet in Friday's semifinal games at the Summer Olympics on Friday: Korea, Cuba, the United States and Japan.

The U.S. clinched a place in the medal round Tuesday by rallying for a 4-2 victory over a Chinese Taipei team that personified the intense competition from top to bottom at the Games. All that remains are the exact matchups, which will be determined when all four teams play their seventh and final games of the preliminaries on Wednesday, including the U.S. vs. Japan at 7 p.m. local time (7 a.m. ET) at the Wukesong Main Field.

"We came halfway around the world to get to the medal round, and like I said early on, this is the best competition I've been involved in with the Olympics," said U.S. general manager Bob Watson. "You're going to have someone get into the semifinals with three losses. We've only got half of our work done. We've got some games to play against some tough clubs, and we'll have to play our A-game.

"I've heard a lot of people say they want to see us play Cuba for the gold medal. The way I look at it, we've got to play them all anyway. I just want to be there. I don't care who we play, as long as we've done our part to be there."

Korea beat Cuba on Tuesday to remain the only unbeaten team at 6-0. Cuba is 5-1. The U.S. and Japan are each 4-2. Korea will be the No. 1 seed, Cuba will be No. 2, and the other two clubs will decide their order of seeding with Wednesday's game. No. 1 will play No. 4 at 10:30 a.m. local time on Friday, and No. 2 will play No. 3 at 6 p.m. that day. The losers will play for the bronze medal at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, and the winners will meet at 6 p.m. that day to decide the gold and silver.

"This game was huge for us, because it alleviates some of the pressure going into [the Japan game], even though we're not just going to show up against them," said shortstop Jason Donald, who showed the representative emotion after getting to first base with an RBI single in the eighth that produced the final run. "The goal is to get in. Obviously we're not satisfied with the worst-case scenario of a bronze medal or no medal. We're going for the gold medal. That's why we're here."

Chinese Taipei struck first, when Chih-Sheng Lee led off the fifth inning with a double, was bunted over to third and scored on an error by first baseman Matt Brown. But the U.S. team answered immediately in the bottom of the inning, getting a run of its own on a leadoff triple by Dexter Fowler and an RBI double by Brian Barden.

The U.S. played this game without outfielder Matt LaPorta -- who will be unavailable against Japan because of the mild concussion he sustained when he was beaned Monday night against China. Yet the U.S., also missing second baseman Jayson Nix -- who expects to play in the medal round after being hit in the face by a pitch last Friday -- once again made up for a key absence, particularly in the outfield.

Nate Schierholtz threw out Chin-Feng Chen at home with a perfect peg from right to preserve a 1-1 score through the top of the sixth. Fowler was on base all four times, hitting a triple, double and single and drawing a walk. John Gall led off the sixth with a homer and the eighth with a double and run.

The sixth inning was decisive. After Schierholtz's big play in right, Gall led off the bottom of that inning with a homer over the wall in left-center. The U.S. never trailed again. Lou Marson walked, Donald sacrificed him over to second -- "I haven't had a sac bunt the whole year in Double-A and now I've had three here," Donald said -- and then Fowler slashed a double to left while hitting from the left side. That gave the U.S. a 3-1 lead and made an eventual winner out of Brandon Knight (1-0).

"Everybody on our team feels like we've earned it, because we battled in the trenches the last several days," Gall said. "It's been a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the way this crowd is up every night, the competition being this top-notch. It has been intense. Every team we play is gunning for us. It's really amazing the talent across the world, and that was a great baseball team we just beat tonight."

In his second start of the Olympics, Knight was effective early, striking out five of the first seven batters he faced. Although he did not record a strikeout after the second inning, he was able to battle and keep Taipei from no more than two runs in the game.

"[Chinese Taipei] was what we expected and I was just very impressed [with them]," Knight said. "I think it is something that I have been through having played in Asia. They really do a good job of making adjustments. Their scouting is second to none and they really pay attention to what is going on.

"The first time through the order I was able to make some good pitches and get some swings and misses. But they made the adjustment. They started taking some good pitches and taking some good swings on others. I was impressed but I also wasn't surprised."

Chinese Taipei cut the U.S. lead to 3-2 when Chih-Sheng Lin answered Gall's leadoff homer with a leadoff clout of his own in the seventh. Knight stayed on to retire one more batter, and then Mike Koplove came in from the bullpen induced two groundouts to end the inning. He threw a 1-2-3 eighth to extend his Olympic perfection to 4 1/3 hitless innings. Kevin Jepsen got the save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

There were some tense moments early in this tournament, as the U.S. started 1-2 with tough losses to Korea and then Cuba sandwiched around a 9-0 win over the Netherlands. Some people might even have had a sudden doubt about whether the Americans were going to make it past the semifinal cut.

"There was never a doubt in my mind," Donald said. "There was not one guy who pushed the panic button here. We had to persevere. And we're in the medal round."

Now the baseball team has a chance to add to the U.S. overall lead in the medals standings. It will be gold, silver, bronze or zip. All of that remains to be seen, but the first objective has been accomplished.

Girardi Girds Yankees for an Uphill Trip

Published: August 18, 2008

The last of the reporters were filing out of his office Sunday afternoon when Yankees Manager Joe Girardi spun out of his chair and approached a bookshelf behind him. He reached for a blue binder on the shelf that contained scouting reports.

“O.K., who do we have next — Toronto and Baltimore, right?” Girardi said, presumably to the Yankees media relations director, Jason Zillo, the only club employee within earshot.

That quickly, Girardi had put aside the Yankees’ first series victory in almost a month and moved to the next job. With 38 games to play, 10 games to make up on Tampa Bay in the division race and five and a half games to make up on Boston in the wild-card race, the Yankees face a difficult, but not insurmountable, task in trying to assure themselves a postseason berth.

The 2004 Houston Astros are the only team to come from seven games back through 122 games or later to earn a wild-card berth, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The Yankees trailed the Red Sox by seven through 122 games, before cutting two games off Boston’s lead by beating Kansas City on Saturday and Sunday.

The Yankees can also draw hope from last year’s Philadelphia Phillies, who overtook the collapsing Mets for the National League East title after being seven games back with just 17 to play.

As the Yankees begin a six-game trip Tuesday night at the Rogers Center, much of what can happen remains within their control, particularly in the more realistic pursuit of the wild card. They face the Red Sox six more times — three times next week at Yankee Stadium, then the final three games of the regular season at Fenway Park.

But the Yankees are also entering a stretch in which they will play 16 of their next 22 games on the road, including the makeup of a May 11 rainout at Detroit that begins a 10-day trip to Tampa Bay, Seattle and Anaheim. That could be troublesome for a team that is 28-31 outside the Bronx and dropped 7 of 10 games on its most recent trip.

“We knew we were going to go through this because of all the home games we had in July,” Girardi said. “Back on the road, back to work.”

Over all, the Yankees will face teams with winning records in 28 of the final 38 games. Besides two series each against the Rays, the Red Sox and the Blue Jays, the Yankees play the other two divisional leaders, the Angels and the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox (70-53) are tied with Minnesota atop the American League Central.

Depending on how that race goes, either the White Sox or the Twins will be a wild-card factor, too. Chicago and Minnesota each entered Monday a half-game behind the Red Sox in the wild-card race and four and a half games in front of the Yankees.

“You’re constantly reminded, because people are always talking about it,” the Yankees’ captain, Derek Jeter, said. “The teams we’re trying to catch, we play. Bottom line is, if we win our games, we’ll be fine.”

Hideki Matsui’s return from an inflamed left knee should help. He was scheduled to be activated from the disabled list in time for Tuesday’s game, and will be a designated hitter for the rest of the season, according to Girardi.

But the Yankees also need better production from their marquee hitters. “If we don’t, we’re not going to win,” said the cleanup hitter Alex Rodriguez. “That’s what it comes down to. Three, four, five in the lineup have to come up big, and we haven’t lately.”

Rodriguez’s game-tying three-run homer in the first inning of Sunday’s 15-6 rout of Kansas City was welcome, given his .235 average with runners in scoring position when the day began. Rodriguez batted all five times Sunday with men on base, delivering three hits and five runs batted in and walking twice. Jason Giambi’s grand slam Sunday produced only his third multiple-R.B.I. game since July 2, when he drove in six runs against the Red Sox. Since then, he has hit .211 (20 for 95).

Two places ahead of Rodriguez, Jeter went 4 for 4 Sunday, his fourth consecutive multihit game. He has hit .631 (12 for 19, all singles) in that stretch.

“You can expect those guys to contribute, because they’ve done it before,” Girardi said.

But those hitters will have a quick challenge this week, having to face the Blue Jays’ A. J. Burnett on Tuesday and the even more imposing Roy Halladay on Thursday. Halladay shut down the Red Sox on Saturday night at Fenway Park for his 14th victory and 8th complete game of the season.

Combined, Burnett and Halladay are 4-1 against the Yankees this season. Halladay threw a two-hit shutout against them in mid-July. And the Blue Jays are only two games behind the Yankees in the American League East. So against the odds, and against some very good pitchers, the Yankees will go back on the road this week, traveling uphill.

INSIDE PITCH

CARL PAVANO pitched better than PHIL HUGHES in their Sunday rehabilitation starts, and General Manager BRIAN CASHMAN would not rule out Pavano;s starting for the Yankees on Saturday in Baltimore. Pavano, returning from reconstructive elbow surgery and pitching for Class AA Trenton, held Reading to one run and six hits with six strikeouts in six innings. Hughes, in a start for Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, allowed five runs and eight hits in three and two-thirds innings against Lehigh Valley, the worst team in the International League at 52-76. “That’s why we’ve been getting him ready, so he can come back and pitch for us, whether it’s Saturday or some point beyond that,” Cashman said of Pavano, who has one major league victory since 2005. Pavano is in the final year of a four-year, $39.95 million contract. ... JOBA CHAMBERLAIN accompanied the Yankees to Toronto, where he was expected to continue his throwing program.

The mailbag opens back up

Doug writes: Do you think there’s any chance the Yanks would sign Francisco Rodriguez to be the 8th inning guy, and would he be open to that role?

Answer: That sounds good for the Yankees. But K-Rod is going to want to close in the prime of his career and make big money. The Yankees are already paying Mariano to close.

Daniel writes: I wanted to ask you if you knew anything about the Washburn situation. I just heard that he was claimed but it’s unknown which teams did that. Given the interest of the team in Washburn previous to the trade deadline, I am surprised they did not move to claim him, especially when the rotation is in dire need of an arm.

Answer: The Twins claimed him, Daniel. Seattle wanted either Kevin Slowey or Nick Blackburn back in a trade. Obviously that’s ridiculous. The Mariners have an inflated opinion of what Washburn is worth and the Yankees don’t want to give in to their demands.

----

Dan writes: Do you know how many Yankees have been put on/cleared waivers? Do you see them possibly becoming sellers for any reason?

Answer: At some point, probably all of them were placed on waivers. That common at this time of the year. No idea who cleared. I don’t see them become sellers in the next two weeks before playoff rosters must be set. Any players who might be worth trading are either players they want to keep or guys who have no-trade clauses. I don’t see any trades coming down at this point.

Marc writes: Somebody needs to ask Girardi why he refuses to hit and run with Jeter while Damon is on first. If a guy is hitting a lot of weak ground balls to second and GIDP, why don’t you hit and run to stay out of the double play? Jeter would fist one though the hole left open at second half the time, and you would have runners on the corners with nobody out. Also, A-Rod needs to bat third, and move Abreu to fourth. You have to do something to try and get Alex out his slump. And Abreu is the team’s best clutch hitter.

Answer: Marc, are you available to manage the rest of the season? I’m forward your e-mail to Brian Cashman.

----

Dave writes: If the Yankees continue to play poorly, do you think the front office will forego the playoffs this year and call up some of the young prospects and let them play? As a fan, I really do not think the Yanks are going to make the playoffs this year; but I would enjoy watching the kids play.

Answer: There are two problems with your idea, Dave. I don’t think they’ll give up and I don’t think they really have any MLB-ready prospects. The players in Scranton are pretty much organizational players and not prospects. You’ll see a few new faces on Sept. 1 but no wholesale changes.

----

Eric writes: I love the Yankees, you should not give up on them! They’re my boys. I feel very strongly about this.

Answer: Moving right along …

----

Vinnie writes: Pete, who do you think is the one free agent they should go after next season?

Answer: I was very impressed with Mark Teixeira when the Yankees were out in Anaheim earlier this month. But the guy to get is CC Sabathia. The new Stadium will be the same dimensions as the old Stadium, making lefty starters important. Sabathia would give them a true No. 1 starter as Chien-Ming Wang recovers from his injury. A rotation of Sabathia, Wang, Andy Pettitte and/or Mike Mussina and the one or two most deserving of the kids (Joba presumably) would be formidable.

That would put everybody in their proper slots. It also would enable you to trade a young pitcher as part of a package to get a good young hitter.

Thanks for all the great questions.

Is It Time To Give Up Hope On The 2008 Yanks?

August 14, 2008, 12:25 am
By Tyler Kepner

Maybe people were just so ready for a new Yankees chapter that most of us ignored the obvious in spring training: their young pitchers might not be as polished as advertised. Intelligent people across baseball thought Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy were ready to contribute. Because of injuries, ineffectiveness or both, it just hasn’t worked out.

I bring this up because yet another team has shown the Yankees what they are missing. Look at the Minnesota Twins. Consider these names: Scott Baker, Glen Perkins, Nick Blackburn, Kevin Slowey, Francisco Liriano. Five young starters. Only Liriano, who was hurt, attracted widespread hype in March. All have proven more ready to help their team win than any comparable young starters on the Yankees.

Yet pitching is the Yankees’ strength. Derek Jeter acknowledged as much after Wednesday’s embarrassing loss to end a miserable 3-7 road trip. “To be honest, our pitching has been pretty good,” Jeter said. “We’ve got to find ways to score runs.”

Their repeated failures in runners with scoring position might be a statistical fluke, but it’s killing the team, and the front office clearly recognizes that. What they can do about it – long term — is another story.

They made a nice trade for a solid hitter in Xavier Nady, and that’s a start. But unless you believe in Brett Gardner – and maybe we should – there’s no position player from the farm system ready to help next season.

There’s a lot to fix, and it will be interesting to see if the road trip saps the spirit of the players the way it has for many fans. (Even the good folks at nomaas.org have given up hope.) Three games at home against the Royals might make the Yankees feel better, but this is a real test for Manager Joe Girardi.

His lineup on Monday, after the Anaheim sweep, when he sat the team’s hottest hitter in Johnny Damon, was puzzling for many in the clubhouse. There’s clearly a void in the coaching staff, too, with the departure of Larry Bowa.

Players expected to take off toward greatness, like Robinson Cano, have slid back. Players expected to mature into steady contributors, like Melky Cabrera, have not. Bench guys, like Wilson Betemit, have been disappointing.

And veterans whose prime years are behind them have started what might be a steady downward trend in their statistics: like the 2 and 3 hitters, Jeter and Bobby Abreu (though he’s driving in runs).

There are deep problems, but there’s still time to make a run. The Yankees might have one last gasp in them. But there’s no evidence of that right now.

Yanks Just Don’t Have Their Heads in the Game

Bobby Abreu after being called out by the umpire Brian Runge, left, on a steal attempt of second to end the top of the sixth inning.

Published: August 13, 2008

MINNEAPOLIS — The worst part for the Yankees on Wednesday was not so much that they lost again. Losing happens almost every day. It was the way they lost that was most disturbing.

The Yankees came to the end of a three-city stumble with a 4-2 loss to the Minnesota Twins that was filled with mental mistakes. They lost 7 of 10 on the trip and are showing no signs they will seriously compete for a playoff spot.

“It’s a frustrating loss, a frustrating road trip,” Johnny Damon said. “We do need to get better. It’s getting pretty late for us.”

The Yankees played without shortstop Derek Jeter, who is out with a bruised left foot. He promised to play on Friday, and he cannot return soon enough.

With Wilson Betemit at shortstop, Robinson Canó at second base and Melky Cabrera in center field, the Yankees’ defense up the middle was painfully erratic. Several miscommunications bothered Manager Joe Girardi.

“I don’t understand it,” Girardi said. “We’ve been playing way too long to have that happen. It’s something that shouldn’t happen. It’s inexcusable. Those guys have played together long enough, they understand what they need to do. Sometimes it’s just trying to do too much, and you can’t. You have to be able to relax and play.”

Fittingly, a trip that started with a shoulder injury to a rookie pitcher ended the same way. On Aug. 4 in Texas, Joba Chamberlain went down. On Wednesday, it was reliever Dan Giese. He left after three hitters with a stiff shoulder.

As he usually does, Girardi tried to play down the injury, telling reporters, “He’s O.K., just a little stiff.” He added that Giese would need no medical exams, only treatment, and would probably be ready for bullpen work by Saturday.

Giese told a different story, and a media relations representative soon confirmed that he will see a doctor on Thursday.

“Once the first batter got in there, I definitely didn’t feel good, and I started overthrowing,” Giese said. “That’s when it started to stiffen up on me. It’s like if you get a tetanus shot and there’s that ache real deep in there. It feels like somebody punched you in the shoulder. I couldn’t get extension on any of my pitches.”

Giese was working in relief of Darrell Rasner, who did what he usually does: work five innings and give the team a chance to win.

Double plays helped Rasner in the second and the third, but his defense let him down in the fourth. After a leadoff walk to Joe Mauer, Rasner got Justin Morneau to ground to third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who whipped a throw to second.

Canó caught the ball, but he came off the bag and was charged with an error. Girardi absolved Canó, saying the runner would have been safe either way and that Rodriguez should have thrown to first.

“The umpire said he beat the throw, not that I was off the bag,” Canó said.

With one out, Delmon Young delivered the only damaging hit off Rasner. A day after swatting an opposite-field, three-run homer off Mariano Rivera, Young did the same off a cutter from Rasner to give the Twins a 3-1 lead.

“I left it up a little bit and he got a good swing on it and hit it to the right part of the ballpark,” Rasner said. “It was up, and I think that was the trouble. If it was down, I think it’s a different story.”

The Twins needed only those runs to win, but miscues in the later innings irked Girardi. In the sixth, Damon threw to second instead of third on a fly out because Betemit did not tell him the runner at second was tagging up.

In the seventh, Nick Punto blooped a single off the glove of a charging Cabrera. It was Canó’s ball, and he signaled for it, but he backed off when Cabrera called him off.

In the eighth, Mauer stole second when Canó and Betemit both converged on the base; the throw got away and nicked Betemit on the leg. It was another puzzling defensive performance by Betemit, who played first base in Anaheim last Sunday and failed to react to a ground ball single that lost the game.

“This club hasn’t made a lot of mental mistakes,” Girardi said. “Today there were a couple. I don’t know if it’s because Derek’s not out there; it’s still no excuse. All the things that happened today were in the middle. Different shortstop.”

It was a different shortstop, but a typical result: another loss for the Yankees, and another day gone in a season that is quickly getting shorter.

INSIDE PITCH

Manager Joe Girardi said starters Phil Hughes and Carl Pavano would make at least one more start before returning to the Yankees, though conceivably that could change because of Dan Giese’s shoulder injury. For now, Hughes is scheduled to throw 100 pitches for Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday, when Pavano is expected to start again for Class AA Trenton. ...Hideki Matsui (knee) is scheduled to start a rehabilitation assignment Thursday in Tampa, Fla. ... The deadline for signing amateur draft picks is Friday, and the Yankees still have not come to terms with their first two choices, pitchers Gerrit Cole and Jeremy Bleich, who are represented by Scott Boras. Cole has a U.C.L.A. scholarship as leverage and Bleich could return to Stanford for his senior year.

Cole已經得到了U.C.L.A.

Posada Will Have Surgery and Be Out Six Months

Published: July 29, 2008

Jorge Posada arrived at Yankee Stadium on Monday and went to work in the batting cage in his effort to return as a designated hitter. Two hours later, he learned his season was over.

General Manager Brian Cashman and Manager Joe Girardi told Posada he was free to have season-ending surgery to repair labrum and capsule damage in his right shoulder. The trade for outfielder Xavier Nady makes Johnny Damon the full-time D.H.

The surgery is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, and Cashman said the recovery would take a minimum of six months. But considering Posada’s age (37 next month) and the unpredictable nature of shoulder injuries, it could take up to a year.

“You can’t expect anything — you hope,” Cashman said. “When you mess with shoulders, those are the dangerous ones.”

Posada, who had told reporters earlier Monday that he wanted to keep playing, said in a statement that he understood the need for surgery. He finished the season with a .268 average, 3 home runs and 22 runs batted in over 51 games.

“With Xavier here now, there isn’t as much pressure on me to return,” Posada said. “As difficult as it is, I can now focus on coming back 100 percent for next season instead of coming back at less than that now.”

TALKS WITH SEATTLE COOL It says a lot about the philosophical gulf between the Yankees and the Mariners that Seattle expressed interest in the Yankees’ top prospect, reliever Mark Melancon, in a potential deal for starter Jarrod Washburn. Barring a major shift by the Mariners before Thursday’s trading deadline, the teams will not make a trade.

The co-chairman Hal Steinbrenner could not mention Washburn’s name directly on Monday, but there was no doubt what he was talking about when asked about potential trades.

Steinbrenner, who has taken an active role in consulting with Brian Cashman, agreed that improving the back of the rotation was an obvious priority, and he said that a contract running through next season (such as Washburn’s) would not stand in the way of a move. But he added an ominous note.

“We made a good deal with the Pirates, but we did give away several good, young people, and that’s the way it has to be,” Steinbrenner said. “It’s going to have to be our trade. Anything we do is going to be our trade.”

That was a clear signal that the Yankees will not meet the Mariners’ initial requests for Washburn, who is owed about $14 million through next season. The Yankees see Washburn as a marginal upgrade and do not believe another team would take his contract.

Because of that, the Yankees see no reason to part with a top prospect unless the Mariners take Kei Igawa. The Mariners, meanwhile, seem to believe there could be a strong market for Washburn this winter if he continues to pitch well.

Things could change before Thursday’s 4 p.m. deadline, but for now there is no momentum toward a deal.

“Anybody who thinks that there’s something hot should check with their source, because they’re lying to you,” Cashman said, referring to all potential deals. “It’s frigid out there.”

MATSUI TAKES SOME SWINGS Wearing a brace on his inflamed left knee, Hideki Matsui took 20 swings off a tee before Monday’s game. Matsui said he felt fine and that barring any setbacks, he hoped to begin a rehabilitation assignment in a week or two. Matsui can take his time, because he could have surgery on the knee in November and still be ready for spring training.

WANG’S CAST COMING OFF Chien-Ming Wang said he expected to have the cast removed from his right foot on Tuesday, the first significant step in a monotonous recovery from the injury he sustained June 15. Wang will be on crutches for another week as he starts to walk again, and he may begin throwing while seated in a chair.

Asked if he thought he had enough time to return to the Yankees this season, Wang said, “I’ll try to do it.”

Wang said he spent most of his time watching television and playing basketball on PlayStation. He summed up his rehab in one word: “Boring.”

UPDATE ON HUGHES AND PAVANO Because of bad weather in Tampa, Fla., Phil Hughes and Carl Pavano are now scheduled to pitch on Tuesday for Class A Charleston. They will be limited to two innings, or roughly 35 pitches, but because of the nature of their injuries — a fractured rib for Hughes, an elbow operation for Pavano — Hughes has a greater chance to contribute this season.

“Hughes has a chance to fly through his rehab more so than Pavano, because Pavano’s coming back from elbow reconstruction, and that has a lot more obstacles,” Brian Cashman said. “Phil Hughes has no elbow or shoulder issues. Carl’s going to have a tougher road.”

Posada Decides to Play On, Hoping to Put Off Operation

Published: July 24, 2008

The one thing Jorge Posada knows for sure is that he needs surgery to repair damage in his labrum and shoulder capsule. But Posada is not ready to concede the rest of the season, even if it means that his recovery will cost him part of 2009.

As recently as two days ago, Posada was convinced his season was over, no matter how much the Yankees might have wanted him to continue. But he told reporters Wednesday that while he would not catch the rest of this season, he would use the next two weeks to determine if he could hit without restrictions. If he can, Posada said he would return as a designated hitter and first baseman, and put off the operation until the winter.

“It’s not about me; it’s about the team now,” Posada said. “How can I help the team? That’s why I’m going through rehab. If I’m able to hit, then I’m going to try to do that. If I’m not able to hit, I’m going to have surgery.”

Posada said he hoped that by not throwing, his shoulder could be strong enough to make him a viable hitter. He has not helped much on offense this season, with three homers and a slugging percentage of .411, his lowest mark since becoming the regular catcher in 2000.

Manager Joe Girardi said Posada still wanted to contribute now, even if it meant missing time in 2009 from an operation that will require six months of recovery. “There’s a risk-reward, yes,” Girardi said. “It could run into next year if he had the surgery Nov. 1, absolutely.”
